2024 Formula DRIFT Super Drift Challenge: Great 8 (Day 2)

A Riveting Conclusion on the Streets of Long Beach

Day 2 of the 2024 Formula DRIFT Super Drift Challenge unfolded with an air of intensity and anticipation that only this iconic location could inspire.ย The streets of Long Beach, lined with drifting fans, set the stage for an evening of thrilling performances.

Wait, What's Super Drift Again?

The Super Drift Challenge is an invitational showdown that showcases the best of the drifting world without the pressure of championship points. This event stands out as a crowd-pleaser at the Grand Prix of Long Beach, where it does not contribute to the rankings of the FD PRO or PROSPEC Championships.

A Drift Down Memory Lane

Introduced in 2012, Super Drift brought a traditional elimination-style competition to the sport, minus the pressure of rankings. Judging criteria include the driverโ€™s line through the course, the angle of their turns, and their overall style. The proximity of the chase car to the lead car also plays a crucial role.

As Super Drift continues to evolve, it remains a pivotal part of the annual eight-round Formula DRIFT calendar. This event not only highlights the skill of its competitors, but serves as an exciting prelude to the competitive season.

Unpredictable Match-Ups

The competition was fierce on Saturday as drivers were paired through a random draw, leading to some entertaining and unexpected matchups. The blend of Formula DRIFT PRO and PROSPEC competitors added an extra layer of excitement, as newer drivers got their shot to compete against veteran champs.

Day 2 Highlights: Redemption and Victory

O'Sullivan's Comeback

Connor O'Sullivan, finding redemption from the previous day's challenges, demonstrated remarkable skill by defeating two seasoned PRO competitors, Rome Charpentier and Jonathan Hurst. His performance not only secured him the second place spot but also marked him as a rising star in the drifting world.

Wang's Continued Excellence

Forrest Wang, a six-time Super Drift Challenge winner, was hoping to add another victory to his impressive record. Despite a strong start and a bye-run to the Final 4 due to Kyle Mohan's absence, Wang's journey was halted by Thorne in a gripping battle, resulting in a third-place finish.
